Ways to Split Rent
There are different ways to split rent. A 50/50 split divides the rent equally, while an income-based split uses each person's share of the combined income. This calculator starts with income and can also adjust the result for differences in private living space.
50/50
Both people pay half of the rent. This is the simplest option and can work well when incomes and living arrangements are similar.
By income
Each person pays a share of the rent based on their share of their combined income. This can be useful when incomes differ.
By living space
If one person has more private living space, you can adjust the income-based rent split to reflect that difference. The calculator offers three adjustment levels:
Slight: Increases the share of the person with more space by 2.5 percentage points.
Moderate: Increases their share by 5 percentage points.
Large: Increases their share by 7.5 percentage points.
The other person's share decreases by the same amount.
For example, if your income-based share is 40% and you have more space, selecting a moderate adjustment increases your share to 45%. The other person's share decreases from 60% to 55%.
For €1,500 monthly rent, you would pay €675 instead of €600.
The adjustment is optional, so you can choose the level that feels fair to both of you.
50/50 or Income-Based Rent Splitting?
Couples commonly choose between splitting rent equally and splitting it proportionally based on income. A 50/50 split is simple and gives both people the same rent amount. An income-based split changes each person's contribution according to their share of the couple's combined income.
Neither method is universally fair. The right choice depends on your incomes, living arrangements and what you both agree feels fair. Learn more about 50/50 vs proportional rent splitting.

Example Calculation
Here's an example of how the rent split calculator works. Let's say your monthly rent is €1,200, and you earn €2,400 while your partner earns €1,600. Your combined income is €4,000, so you earn 60% of the total and your partner earns 40%.
| Split Method | You | Your Partner | Total Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on income |
€720 60% |
€480 40% |
€1,200 |
| 50/50 |
€600 50% |
€600 50% |
€1,200 |
With an income-based split, you pay €120 more and your partner pays €120 less than with a 50/50 split.
